He may not be mean but he is struggling to

have a grip on what is going on.

if you work in a labor intensive industry or he came from such an industry, his behavior comes to be very understandable. He has to optimize labor resources to outperform his peers, resulting in a very micromanaging behavior.

you may open your mind to him. From your description, I think he actually is not that bad. He may not like you, but he did not let his opinion or feeling on you intervene into day to day interactions.

please don't justify your own position by creating a self fulfilling prophecy of how bad a manager he is. Just keep dialogues open and be honest with him and yourself. feel free to discuss your achievement and importance of your achievement should you make a sound  case.
