Based on my limited knowledge, most companies acquire one or more short-term disability insurance policies. Policies vary one from another about eligibility and entitlement. For example, I was entitled to receive 60% of my base salary for three months from the insurer after the lawful maternity leave expired. 

anyway, articulate your friend's circumstances and provide all documentation to the company's human resource, and ask what the company can do for her.
