Recruiters surely know how to manipulate people, that's their job

I'd tell them immediately that I am not comfortable with the offer (if I can afford to turn it down), either they bump it up or else.

Of course, money is important. on the other hand,  money may not be the only thing, may not even be the deciding factor, it depends on what the job can bring you, what stage in your career, how long is the postion tenure...
