hard to ask it directly, has to get around. My ways to get around usually go like this:
1. Ask your potential future boss "how do you motivate people who work for you?",
"how often do you prefer people to report progress to you?",
"how do you expect people to perform?"
etc, etc
2. Ask your potential future colleagues "how does the boss motivate you?", "what the three things you like the boss the most?"
if the boss is a hand-off type of boss, almost every one will mention it as the good side of the boss.
3. if you have the chance, ask your future boss's boss: "what's three of his/her greatest strengths?".
always ask open-ended question so that people have a chance to open up and speak out their minds
