Now I wish to provide an update to serve as a real-life data point for the folks here.
Last March, after I calmed down a little bit, I started to look around for a possible new job. I had the opportunity to become the CTO of a small but well known and richly funded firm in my business/tech area but decided to turn it down. The CTO position would be very high profile but would also involve significantly more travel, stress and politics. The base compensation would have been comparable (~$300K) however there would be no stock compensation (which turned out to be quite significant later in 2013).
In addition to the CTO position, there was a "pre-IPO" possibility according to a headhunter I was talking to but I also turned it down - I did not believe in their business model and didn't want to move.
In any case, I decided to stick around but asked my boss for a higher than average raise for 2014 when we were doing the annual review. I made the point very clearly that by increasing my compensation according to the same percentage point, I was being left behind more and more compared with my co-workers in absolute $$ numbers. I stated I needed to catch up (no threats or anything negative). He got it immediately and replied he would see what he could do.
Just got my new numbers a couple of weeks ago and my raise was about 12.5%. Also, my employer's stock price went up 40% so my stock compensation became quite valuable. I feel appreciated and pretty happy these days.
The take-home points are: 1). Do your job well; 2). Make sure you have other options; 3). Stay where you are is always an option; 4). Ask for what you need and you might even get it; 5). 職場生涯 is a great place to ask for advice.
Good luck every one.
