It could be but most employers check the references you provided

Some employer may actually google your company name and call the HR at your previous company. It is less likely though.
Background check also includes criminal check. Have you ever had even a speeding ticket etc.
Certain government or banks will check very carefully. If you were late on some of your credit card payments certain banks will not hire you.
