commuting through bus before settling on renting. Don't know where you are, but I know in DC, there are quite a few commuter buses that run from MD residential areas to downtown DC on week days. Riders park their cars free of charge at the "Park and Ride" stops and take the buses. Because these buses take local routes, they are usually faster than driving through popular freeways. Riders can read or nap on the buses, which is a big plus if you need to learn new stuff for work. If you rent, you'll be away from your child(ren) all week long, and that doesn't seem to be fair to them and your wife.
Judging from your tranfic condition, you must be located in a metropolitan area which may have the similar commuter bus system. Worth looking into it if you ask me. Your state's Transportation Dept web site should have this kind of info.
