He sure looks like someone we say who wants to have his cake and eat it too :-)
But it's entirely possible that he knows the right anwser already and is just playing the what-if scenarios here in case he can get a better deal out of this whole thing.
Anyway, asking the manager for a higher salary can be viewed as greedy and can turn ppl off. You only raise it when you have a very good reason and are ok with the possibility that they don't offer you. Examples of reasonable scenarios where you can renegotiate salary are: company not offering 401K, bad medical benefit or extreme limited vacation time.
