The first 6 months, is the time you need to try your best to give everybody a good impression.  You really should obviously work more than enogh, rather than let people suspect you are not working enough.  After you become permanent, talk to you boss to find out if he is ok with your schedule.  Now, stay for 8.5 hours is what you should do.
