My host mom( a white lady) has a PhD degree in psychology and she is a psychiatrist. Her family has a deep root in her city and her hu*****and is a famous lawyer in that city. She could make money but not much. Compared to her hu*****and, her earning is just her pocket money.A lot of customers were from referrals which were the results of many years of connections through her family, business, friends, church, etc. To build up that connection is almost impossible for us in a short period of time. Besides, there is a lot of operation cost to practice as a psychiatrist. At least you need to rent an office and have all the office equipments. You may even need to hire part time assistants (or your children) to work as a recepitionist to answer phone calls. You will also need to file insurance, taxes, etc.

There is another big hurdle: Do you really understand the cultural difference? Unless your customers are from the same background, it is very difficult to be a good psychiatrist to the people from different background.

Unless you want to work as a volunteer, I would hesitate to sugget you to be a psychiatrist.

Just my suggestion.Thanks!
