Did you check with your company's policy about taking vacation after one submits his/her resignation?  Most of companies won't allow this practice, even he/she has vacation time left, the company will convert the vacation time to $$$ and pay you instead of allowing you physically off work for a few days before the last day.  I do not know the exact reason for this, but my guess is that it is related to the accident insurance, for example, if you are involved in an severe accident and get killed (very unlikely) in those days, the company will still be liable because theoretically you are still company employee even you are in the process of exit.  From company's point of view, this is a risk needs to be managed and that is why HR ask you the date you will be physically in office.  They will calculate how much $$$ they will pay for your vacation time.
