No, no, no.

He is definitely not in a position to fight for you in front of your big boss.  Putting it in youself in his shoe, are you going to fight for a colleague knowing that the big boss has already decided that improvement is needed.  For what? justice? What you expect him to say?  "no improvement needed?"  

My suugestion is you handle it this way:

(1) Do have a talk with your direct supervisor, not defense yourself,  indicating that while you have different opinion about the review, you did get the message and you will take immediate action to address the concern, at least to significantly improve the communication, such as "asking clarification before...."  This is what the management wanted to hear and see - an employee has positive attitude and take actions.  Management does not just firing people simply because a poor performance review unless it has been planned.  In that case, no matter what you do, it won't change the final result. 

(2) Prepared for worst, if they do plan to get rid of you.  You need to make sure your separation from the company is not because bad performance.

The key is KEEP POSITIVE ATTITUDE AND THINKING.
