My real story
I had worked in a facility of a large healthcare system for 3 years, never used my sick hours and vacation time. By April of this year, i had 240 vacation hours.
Our facility had had 4 directors within the past 3 years. The last one was on duty in Jan of 2012. She was not someone you could ever trust. She didn't come to office, but used an ass kisser to watch us then reported to her. I was not treated respectively, actually very badly. Don't want to go through details.
I tried to talk to her, but she had very typical black people's attitude. I knew there was no hope, then planned to leave. I applied a few positions inside the system, that were transfers , which needed her approval. You can imagine, i didn't get any. i intended to stay in this system, so i could have all my benifits continously. She really needed me work there because i was the only one at that facility with all regiatration of the specialties.
When i didn't see any hope of transferring, i found a travel assignment of 3 months which was good money but had to leave the city of my house. Then i requested my vacation for the 240 hours. Everyone knows that usually is impossible. I submitted my request in March, By April , i supposed to start my 3 months big money assignment, i pushed my boss very nicely for approval. The reason i gave was, 240 hours were the maxinum you can collect. Over 240 hours, you will not get any more PTO. Of course she couldn't find anyone to cover my work and refused. I bet she assured that i didn't get any transfer position so i had no where to go and said : " If you leave work for so long, then you are not qualified for Full-time. You might want to become PRN. " PRN is a position means work when needed. That was absolutely unreasonable!!! You can tell what kind of person she was!! But i was very calm, didn't say anything to correct her . My answer with a big smile was " Sure, let's do it."
She was the one got very uneasy immediately, i bet she never thought i would just give up this job with no offers. And said "Hey, you might want to think about it, as a PRN, there is no gurantee that you work enough hours." I smiled at her again and left her office. A few minutes later, i went back to her office with my resignation. She looked terrible when i was smiling.
She had such a mess after i left, everyday, she had to call everywhere to get someone come to do ultrasound.
I am now making good money in another city. Assignment ends in August, but i had two offers already from two hospitals of that system. When they asked why i became PRN, i told them the exact words the director said to me. All those interviewers were very shocked and couldn't help creticizing her. Once i finish my assignment, i will go back to be full-time again with full benifits, because within 6 months, you can reinstate all your benifits.
She really looked bad!!! She called me couple of times and asked me to work there, i told her "Sorry!" Last week, she called again said " We really miss you!!" I said "That is very sweet of you!!!"
