I met such kind of situation many times. First I was interviewed by company A, the interview went very well. Then company B sent an email for an opportunity. I replied interest to company B. Then I would get the deny reply from company A.
The most strong evidence is that once I got an interview with company P. Interview was really going well. It is a contractor position so the manager can make the offer. The manager almost offered to me but he worried about my interview with other companies. He said that he will go vacation next week so the decision would be made after he came back.
Next day I sent email to the recuriter for company P, he confirmed that the manager will go for vacation and the decision will be made after the manager comes back. Then I received an email from company Q for a full time leader position. I replied back with interest. After 2 hours, company P sent me email, saying that they move to other candidates.
