It is part of the interview process. There is no guarantee, but you don't want to take the risk. Two candidates with the same qualification, I would pick the one who sent the than you note. It is not a common practice to bring thank you note to the interview though. You can ask for the email address during the interview and send a note after. It is also a good networking opportunity.
