How to get "close" with my boss?

I have been at this job for less than a year.  My boss is a young white American guy. He is actually quite nice, frank, and not difficult or mean. We get along ok, but I somehow don't feel we are very close. It seems he still doesn't totally feel relaxed with me as compared to my American coworker (female) and the other male American coworker who joined the team at the same time as I did.

He and the other female coworker used to be coworkers working together. So I understand they had some shared experiences that allowed them to be pretty close.  My other male coworker (joined the team the same time as I did) once gave him some beer as a gift (not in a secret way). 

I am expecting my boss to help me start my GC application asap. I talked to my boss about it and he said it will be in a year or something according to company policies.  I really want to win his trust so I can get my GC application smoothly. I am single female. My boss is married. I don't want to do anything improper, but I do want to win his help.
