How would you ask about that?  Isn't this like asking for a promotion?

Have never done that before.  What are the proper words? 

If it is salary review season, (I think it's coming soon.) you may just ask it straightforward but with a phrase like "I'm just asking." as a gambit. S/he'll tell you what s/he will tell you what he thinks.
