My 2 cents: First I think by "academia" most people meaning working in labs doing experiments, not teaching.

The chance of being successful in academia (i.e.having your own funding, becoming tenures) is very slim and very few can make it.And the pay is low and you are surrounded by educated and cheap labors from developing countries. In industries, at lease you get paid much more and get exposed to true american culture.
