When you say small company, are you talking about startup?  Or a small business?  They are very different. Startups are much faster pace, so it's not really easy to just "hang out".  Where as small business that have been around for a while have a defined business model, and they are not looking to grow by leaps and bounds in a year or two.  So work life balance would be much better.
