Accidently I turned on my TV and saw the interview between him and the correspondent. He said in Microsoft there were 8,000 employees (his time), all 7,999 employees were afraid of Bill Gates with the exception of him.

He sold his inventions for about $200,000 (I don't remember the exact amount, but not a big number) to pay his employees.
