don't play games with reference

Unless your former colleagues are very powerful and have high influence in company, it is better to use whoever is more familiar with your work. Your academic supervisor is as good as any friend you can find in industry. If your academic supervisor happen to be a big figure in research field, you ahve better chance with his recommnedation.
