You can contact a PI directly, volunteering is a good idea because you need a letter of reference on top of job experience.

If you have friends who are working in this field, you can ask them to keep an eye on who has fundings. It doesn't matter how bad the economy is, as long as a PI has funding and needs a worker, you have a chance.
