looks like you are very very young. so it's ok to start it over again.
But about the conversation with your director, i would suggest:
instead of saying what you planned, why don't you ask first:
Ask him if he is satisfied with your performance in the past year. if you did whatever he expected you to do.
If his answer is YES, you did exactly what I expected. then you might want to say: actually when i interviewed this job, I thought I could work on higher level things, like,,,,,, But, in reality, I did, blablabla, it's not the same as what I planned on my career. BECAUSE .... say all the best of yourself about your industry.
If his answer is NO, i thought you could have achieved on blablabla (must be some higher level things). then you could say: Yes, indeed that's exactly what I planned and the reason I came here to work for YOU. But, the current situation is (your direct supervisor is too micro managing, blalablan). And stop and listen what he says. if he shows any interests to keep you. Work on that proposal, but insiste work independently, not under your current boss anymore.
I would think this is the best strategy so far.
