I think (I could be wrong), if you were terminated by workforce reduction or elimination of the position, you were laid off (so, you qualified for unemployment compensation, you employer would be contacted by state government to verify the layoff upon your filing of a claim). If you were terminated for performance or non-fit for the position, then you were fired. It is good to get it clear with HR first. If you were laid off, therer is no need to cover it up, it happens everyday everywhere now. Good luck
