Please advise - how to switch groups internally

I don't get along with current boss very well, and wanted to switch to different group inside the company. What would be the best approach to do this? Should I talk to the managers in other groups first? How do I know they have openings? If they don't have openings, how do I know when they will have openings? Any suggestions is appreciated?
