I recenetly had such a backgroud check conducted by a third company. They checked all possible aspects including employment histories either I provided records or I had not provided.

In USA, if you had tax ID or SSN, they will check all of these. They contacted all my previous employers that I wrote in employment history, they also check and contact those employers that I did not provide with.

They contacted all UK and China universities from where I obtained a degree, and they phoned me asked for university contact information and details.

I received a copy of such a check report, most of my previous employers rejected to provide detail information for a same reason that the conpany policy will not permit to provide such information.

They obtained all information/data from the States/County where I ever stationed no matter I provide ot not.

For the backgroud check conpany, the more checks they conduct,the more money they will earn from the recruiting company.That is my understanding.
