compensation negotiation

I recieved a call from one of the managers and was told that his boss will call me to discuss the compensation. I have a friend who works at that company and he have told me that his pay. I guess the manager will ask my previous compensation. I should I make up a number that a little bigger than my friend's. What's the potential problem? This is a consulting job from a private company. Thanks for your input!
