Background Check includes driving record, criminal history, education history, and work/salary history. It may also include checking references, but not necessarily performance. Most likely the former employer will confirm your position, job responsibility, time worked, but not performance, because of legal liability concerns.
Most people believe if you have nothing good to say, you'd better say nothing. If you have a good relationship with the reference, they may give you some compliment.
