Don't know about working in England, but if you work in China, Yes, you need a working visa. If you hold a travel visa, you have to leave after three months if you ask a three month stay. Usually, people leave after three months but they just go to Hongkong or Japan or someplace nearby, then come back to pass three month limitation.
