I feel that experienced interviewers (higher level managers) usually play easier than new interviewers. Maybe they don't have to ask specific questions to get what they want since they have more experience. Or, they are in the position to focus on showing/selling how kind bosses they are and how good company it is, which is very important too.
your director is experienced interviewer and you are new...
