I guess there is difference in 走後門 between china and US. In US, you have to do it in profesional way. For examply your friend recommends you to apply, his/her manager cannot guarantee you can get the position; they have to be sure you are competent. However, accepting candidates from internal recommedation is not bad for the company either; they would love to get a person with a good recommendation from a person who they can trust.

BTW, knowing right friends, getting help from a friend at the right time is a reward for your efforts. Setting up good connection is 自食其力 and you have to use your 勤勞的雙手to make it happen. Nobody will set up the good connection for you. Nothing is not decent to get help from friends; that is friend for.
