Agent questions - please help.

I was contacted by an agent last week for a contract position with another company. This position will be an employee at the agent's company side but work for its client on a contract basis. I looked at the client's website and found that there were several similar positions posted. The agent asked me to sign an exclusive (agreement for the representation). My questions are, should I directly apply for the job from the agent's client (website) before signing the agreement? Will it be easier to get the job through the agent than by myself? This is a cross-state job and the agent asked me to agree to pay the cost for the personal interview by myself if I am selected.
