Normally you do not have to give gifts to your boss. they give to you to show their appreciation for your support during the year. But I have been giving my manager gift each year even though she said I do not have to. But we are a kind of close and have been working together as a 2 people team for years.

I think if you are very close to your manager, buying him/her a gift is ok. If not, you do not need to.
