In US, team work spirit is very important. There must be something he is better than you, writing skill, communication skill or managing ambiguity. Maybe your director wants you to coach him technically. I suggested you do you job, moderately share information with him (not all), constantly ask feedback, create a impression of harmony and great team spirit. All managers, just like parents, want a peaceful life. Do not put yourself in an offensive position, especially to your own fellow Chinese. I have never seen anyone with good outcome if he puts himself in the proactively offensive position unless you are the buddy of director, or a young, smart blondy. Do well for what you can do, and there is no need to communicate everything with him unless he requests.
