Yoru boss should be more clear on who is the lead

There should be only one captain on a ship. Not sure about all background, but it does seem like the Korean has an understanding with your boss that she would be the lead. You were not communicated clearly or you did not want to take the hints.
I had the same problem and finally someone has to to tell me that the lead is XXX and I am only a part of the team.
What I did was: do whatever the lead told me but still make sure I control the most important part and build a "sub-team" within that team and lead this sub-team. Use the benefit of this subteam to get contact with external people. Need to be creative here.
