I too feel things were not as complicated as you thought. To be frank, I think you went a little bit overboard when you had your boss SS's trust and when he laid off your friends you disproportionally upset with him. In other word, you viewed your relationship with SS too personal and failed to see him as your boss. Not to deny that you are a competent worker...
