my job hunting experience

I have been graduated more than 10 years and had never concentrated on my work for even one day since I got an offer three years ago. I decided to go aboard for further education after graduation, and I spent lots of time and energy on English exams such as TOFEL, GRE, GMAT, and so on. Finally, I successfully finished my studies with lots of suffering such as English exams, application, and study itself…… But one day, I found I got nothing but two degrees from two famous universities. Since I do not really have real experience, my job hunting became very hard. Fortunately or unfortunately, I got an offer from a family business soon after finishing my studies and I guess it is because of the name of the university. However, I quickly found that they do not really need a person like me and the salary is not good at all. Being there almost a year, I did not stop looking for a better opportunity. But still, my real “Ace” is based on nothing and failed a few interviews. The employers are very practical and they care more about your experience rather than your education.

I have a bunch of friends working in a special technical area; and they suggested me to try this area pretending with years of experience. I got contacts of the managers of almost all companies in that city, and also I learned what kind of questions they would ask. After two month learning/preparing, I felt I should give it try and I started to harass the managers. Usually they do not pick up the phones and leaving messages would not work either. So I just kept calling them every five minutes in the morning until they pick up the phone. The second manager I got through is from a big famous company and I got an interview after conversation. I got the job on the spot after one hour interview and they gave me an intermediate position even without checking my references. Looking back the interview, I still feel I correctly answer most of the questions which are all technical ones without even one like "tell me about urself." After three years, I am already a technical specialist with real experience for billion dollars projects. What I want to say is that human potential can be stimulated to the extreme under certain circumstances. If you want to try and dare to try, you could get what you want even from "0".

主動是對的,但每五分鍾給雇主打電話不一定對找工作有利。 -goodcitizen- 給 goodcitizen 發送悄悄話 (0 bytes) () 07/07/2009 postreply 19:31:14
