you can choose the project and time. Don't worry about the gap on your resume. I think you already have enough working experience in your field. You can take a break and come back as you like. Another benefit of being consultant, if you don't work, you can apply for unemployment benefit as long as you pay unemployment insurance while you have earnings. Staying with children is most precious and worthy thing to do.
