have a thorough understanding of those basic and very frequently used stuff.

Nowadays you might have to differentiate yourself from other candidates who think "we can google and get the answer". yes, many questions can be answered by google, but maybe the interviewers want to see how you understand some basic stuff without help of google, how you deduce/find the results based on your own logical thinking and experience.
