i know economy is bad now. That's why I have contacted my 3 former bosses and all of them give me an offer to go back. One friend in CA offered me a research professor (he has 8 million research money in next 5 years). I am not afraid of laid-off from my current work.

my opinion was that the "tricks" are sometimes good, but the most important in the work is that you can contribute and be a value to company/boss. without that, i don't think my previous bosses will offer me anything. they know I can make a difference in his/her organization.
