Do not play the sympathy card at work.

This card could be played among recruiters, contacts, relatives, and friends, someone you know before the layoff. The purpose is to get their help and land you an interview opportunity somewhere. Once the interview process begins, be a man and act professionally. Playing the sympathy card would put other (equally qualified) candidates at a disadvantage and might backfire once the interviewer frowns on such tactics. Play fair and square. You will get the job you want without leaving a bad feeling behind.
