Never try anything to cover up your mistake.

You might put your job at serious risk.

Everyone makes mistakes, but don't lie about it. It makes things a lot worse. Normally, mistakes are neutral, not bad or good. If you show your responsive nature and capability to solve issues, a good attitude and measures you take afterwards can turn your mistakes into a positive in the eyes of your boss. But lying or covering up will leave a dishonest impression, which is a pure negative. Explaining AFTER admitting your own fault and fixing your own mistake, is sometimes ok. But explaining before you admitting or solving the problem, is a sign of trying to get away from responsibilities.

Procedures are there to protect everyone and mitigate risks. Most of the time, so-called shortcuts take you a lot more time in the end. I know it's very tempting to call the shots, especially you feel you are good at something you are doing. However, if it's violating the procedure, even if you feel you are doing it in the interest of the project or your boss, make sure you get a a written signoff in email, to cover yourself. Your boss will see that as professional manner, instead of inflexibility.
