need to communicate with your boss, not level above

let him know you want to participate in the main project. also, you can be pro-active. Identify some gaps in the main project and make proposal to resolve those gaps. I guess the key is to communicate with your boss at a deeper level. If you can't trust your own boss, it is time to move on then.
