布穀 is dead right, you are in danger, obviously your boss' boss is blowing smoke to game you. When he joked " as long as you won't resign", that means he is aware of your negative mood and getting prepared for your leave due to his risk control, I am assuming he is good senior management.Because they depend on you more, they would be in deeper danger if you leave.

Take care, keep yourself open to other opportunities,if you are really good at technical stuff, try to find better deal, your current one is not the only company in the world. Before you get better deal from outside, go to cheer up your direct boss, that middle layer, most likely your direct boss will use H to force you out. Your direct boss does not care about the company's interest but him self's. If he is not as smart as you, being middle layer, he would rather manager somebody like H.
