Such as getting into Hedge fund or PE or Mutual Fund(Ibanking is gone for most part), it may not be a good move. This way, he can make 6 figure number easily(after 2009). Investment industry will revive soon.

However if he getting tire of tech and don't not like management. Finance is top choice for IT people.

How old is him? Is he going through MBA?
CFA itself may not be enough for him to get in unless he has strong connection with insiders in funds.
