請美國的汽車保險是保車還是保人？

在國內，汽車保險是以車為標的進行保險的，換言之，非車主開了這輛車撞壞了，保險公司同樣理賠。聽說美國有點一點不一樣。我想以在美國的朋友名義買輛車，但是我開，因為他辦理車輛登記和保險手續比我方便。請熟悉的朋友看一下，我這樣做的話會不會有麻煩。謝謝！
