There are two types of engine designs: interference and non-interference. To minimize the dead space in the engine, an interference design allows the valves to protrude into the combustion chamber while piston is moving away, and valves close back when piston compress the air. If they are not synchroize (by the timing belt), the pistons will hit the valves when they compress which is the most concern for a broken timing belt. However, some car models have non-interference design which means no matter the valves are open or not, the pistons will not hit the valves. In this case, you can keep drinving until the belt is broken, and just have it replaced at that time. Except the unconvinience, no harm to the engine will occur.
The consequence of a broken timing belt depends on whether it i
