It should be your case, but it sounds you did not handle properly.
1) You should have clearly addresssed in your letter that you moved out and the lease would be terminated earlier according to the lease and the leaking issue.
2) How long was requested in your lease? I could not udersdand if the leaking started in 2007, then why you did not move out earlier but waited until sep. 2009. That sounds the leaking was very minor, so you chose to renew it and leaking was no longer your concern any more.
3) You should get confirmed by the leasing office for your moving out. did you get any letter or notice from the office after you moving? did you response properly?
In this country, "ignore" is not the best policy, the key is to keep the evidence to support you. If I were you, I would write a letter with all evidence to address leaking issue with the leasing office, to let them undersdand what you did was just according to the lease, and to see what will happen.
