The Hours

Although I watched the movie “The Hours” twice, I still feel a bit confused with the mood of the entire movie. It seems not a simple movie, but I am not able to see in-depth theme which might be present indirectly, if any.The most confusing thing to me is why the three women presented in the movie were so depressing. Virginia seemed suffering from schizophrenia. Death might be the best choice to end her pain. Laura Brown, unfortunately, was difficult for me to understand. I am confused why she abandoned her family. Seems there was a lot going on in her heart, which she could not find a way to release those pressures or whatever they were. Life is sometimes boring and following routine. Sometimes, women lost themselves. Everybody could feel this way. But I can’t agree that leaving her children is a best way to find herself. Why can’t do something while still keeping the family? Children do nothing wrong to hinder a mom finding herself. Laura’s life is a mess to me without any reasonable explanation. What’s worst is her leaving hurt her son Richard deeply and changed his life path profoundly. Clarissa, starred by Meryl Streep, my favorite actress, is also complicated to me. She took care of Richard, who was affected with AIDS, for decades. Maybe it is just because of her strong desire and effort of saving Richard, she could not let Richard choose his own life, again ending his pain and saving his own dignity. It is difficult to watch family members or friends to leave this world forever. But I think respecting their own choices might also be important to treat them as human beings with dignity. Of course, it is easier said than done.
