Twilight
I am not a fan of vampire literature. They are too scary for me since I am a timid girl all the time. When my previous roommate told me how wonderful the movie “Twilight” was, my response was simply ignoring it. I wasn’t even attracted by the handsome leading actor. Unfortunately, for some reason which I don’t even remember, I finished reading the first of the twilight series --- Twilight. It is a fascinating novel, not only for teenagers but adults like me.
The story is not complicated but unexpected. High school student Bella falls in love with the handsome Edward even she knows his real identity as a vampire. Not surprisingly, the story is full of twists and turns including the refusal of Edward, the warning from wolf-man Jacob, the fight with other human blood drinkers.
Two things are very impressive. One is the strong love of Bella toward Edward. It all starts with the physical attraction and the desire of exploring something uncommon as a teenage girl. The love is so unconditional and irrevocable that she is eager to be converted. Therefore, they can be together forever. The second is the kindness of Cullen family. All members in Cullen family are vegetarian, meaning they only hunt for animals instead of human. Most importantly, they love helping people. For instance, Dr. Cullen, who is a vampire and converted all other family members, practices medicine.
Edward in the movie, which I watched twice, is very attractive, especially his smile. However, the description about how they think is more vivid and detailed in the book is than the movie. I am very happy there are no long teeth out of bloody mouth or grotesque faces. The scenes are very beautiful, like a fairy tale. All vampires have been humanized with specific super skills.
I am glad that I am still able to be touched by love stories. I really doubted myself before I read this novel due to the unavoidable natural process of aging. Though I don’t believe I would give up my human life for a vampire, I am very moved by Bella’s braveness and courage though. Maybe this is the lofty theme of this novel --- love is on top of everything, even life.
